“Massively deregulating the fast-growing telecommunications and computing
industries” is turning out to mean media concentration, development of
monopolies, unemployment from “re-engineering,” and the creation of a
world-wide, universal monoculture, “McWorld,” of global capitalism. It
means feeding the monster. The alternative, of creating a public space with
a public communications medium that can be used by everyone to foster true
competition in ideas, is the only real guarantee of freedom. But the
idealogues of the “Magna Carta” don’t believe in public space–for them,
everything is private space, a place to make money.
