Writing is one of the most powerful technologies humans have developed. It
does much more than express ideas; it also helps to construct the realities
we live in. The reality being constructed here by asserting the ascendency
of “powers of mind” over the “brute force of things” reinscribes a very old,
traditional dichotomy between transcendent mind and brute matter. But mind
is matter. Materiality will not be left behind by the heralded Third Wave,
any more than the body is left behind when we sit at computer keyboards. We
live our lives as embodied creatures, not as free-floating minds circulating
over information networks.
