So what's "greatest" mean? What's "pop music" mean? Your reviewers certainly don't agree about these questions. And if you're serious about the ten second criterion, why are entire songs cited? Oh, well. Here's my shot at it.

10. "Night and day, under the hide of me,
There's an, oh, such a hungry yearning burning inside of me."
    Night and Day
    written by Cole Porter
The best mating of music and lyric ever?

9. The opening solo from
    West End Blues
Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five
The most astonishing unplanned musical outburst on record?

8. "Also, a t-tin teardrop."
Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band
The best reminder that pop should be non-rational.

7. "Getting in radio communication, hello, hello!"
    Riding on a Rocket
    Shonen Knife
The best reminder that pop should be fun.

6. Any 10 seconds from
    Satisfaction
    Devo
The best reminder that pop should be unpredictable.

5. "Ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma yeah!"
    Mama We're All Crazee Now
    Slade
The best reminder that pop should be stupid.

4. The first four bars of
    Louie, Louie
    The Kingsmen
The iconic version of the iconic riff.

3. "Ah hoo-hah hoo-hah hoo-hah..."
    Little Darlin'
    The Diamonds
Doing things you didn't know you could do in a song.

2. The opening seconds of
    Only Shallow
    My Bloody Valentine
Despite what decades of liner notes claim, this is the
only music I know of that simply does not work unless
it's played very loud. Noise that you can dance to.

1. Pete's Townshend's fingers sliding on the strings at the start of
    I Can See For Miles
    The Who
The most exciting sound I have ever heard in my life.
