"cars" by gary numan - the opening sequence was like something out of the 21st century. A track that was WELL ahead of its time in 1979.

"My Sharona" by The Knack - the intro guitar lick. I'm amazed that no-one has sampled this and made a 90's hit out of it yet.

"Daytripper" by The Beatles - the intro guitar.

"Strawberry Fields" by the beatles - the panpipe-like intro is incredibly moving, but very simple in melody at the same time.

"A Day In the life" by the beatles - both the intro (with the guitar) and its fantastic crescendo, plus the ending of the song - that 10 minute or so piano chord at the end - a classic thats right up there with Beethoven.

"This Charming Man" by the Smiths - Johnny Marr's opening guitar lick was something extraordinary in the early 80's. Whilst people were enthralled by the decadent excesses of Duran Duran et al., Marr's extraordinary guitar work coupled with Morrisey's morose lyrics was thoroughly timeless.
