Charms are one of the categories of different spells in Harry Potter. One type of charm is called Curses.

A curse is a dark charm that can cause pain, damage, or even death to the victim whom the charm was cast upon. Among all the Dark Charms, curses are the most wicked, strongest, and long-lasting.

This can cause severe discomfort or any negative effect on the person which mostly cannot be reversed. However, you can use a Shield Charm to defend yourself from being cursed.

But not all curses can be deflected by such charm. These curses are the Killing and Cruciatus Curses, the Unforgivable Curses.

Killing Curse, Avada Kedavra, instantly kills the person who is being cast upon on. It gives them a painless kind of death leaving no injury or trace behind.

You cannot block this kind of curse but you can, however, use sacrificial protection as a counterspell. This is when one sacrifices his or her own life in order to save the one who originally will be killed.

Imperio Curse, Imperio, can make a witch or wizard control another person. Among all the Unforgivable Curses, this is the only one that can be defended and the victim, with enough strength, can resist it.

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Viktor Krum, a Bulgarian wizard who participated in the Triwizard Tournament, was under the influence of the Imperius Curse after Barty Crouch Jr. cast it upon him.
