Sam Roland Heughan, popularly known as Sam Heughan, is a Scottish-born actor, producer, author, and businessman.
He rose to stardom with his portrayal of Jamie Fraser in the hit television series, Outlander.
The Starz historical drama series Outlander debuted in 2014 and is still airing.
In addition to Outlander, Heughan has appeared in many other films including the superhero action picture, Bloodshot, as well as the spy comedy, The Empty Train.
Sam Heughan also works in theater and has been in a lot of plays. In fact, his role in Outlying Islands earned him the Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Performer.
Heughan is adored by his followers not only because he is an actor, but also because he is a philanthropist. But controversies also came with the increased love and popularity.
There have been many inquiries about the famous Heughan, but one of the most intriguing is this: Is Sam Heughan gay?
We shall examine the reasons behind those rumors, as well as Sam Heughan’s actual sexual orientation in this article. Let’s dive right in.
Sam Heughan’s Background
On April 30, 1980, in the historic county of Dumfries and Galloway, Sam Roland Heughan was born. Heughan and his older brother were named after characters from The Lord of the Rings by their parents.
This was not surprising, as Heughan’s parents had been active members of the hippie community, Gandalf’s Garden, in London.
Much is not known about Heughan’s Father because he abandoned the family when the kids were very young. Sam Heughan’s mother, Chrissie Heughan, single-handedly raised the two boys.
Heughan relocated from Balmaclellan to neighboring New Galloway when he was five years old. There, he attended Kells Primary School.
He resided in renovated stables on Kenmure Castle’s grounds during this time. He then relocated to Edinburgh at the age of twelve.
He spent a year attending James Gillespie’s High School. He concluded the remainder of his sixth year at the Edinburgh Rudolf Steiner School.
After two years of labor and travel, he received a renowned scholarship to RSAMD, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), in Glasgow. There, he received his degree in 2003.
While schooling, Heughan performed in numerous plays, including The Twits at Citizens Theatre, an adaptation of Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Seagull by Anton Chekhov, Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus, and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
Heughan was one of four students selected in 2002, just before graduating, to represent RSAMD at the BBC Carlton Hobbs radio talent competition. At the graduation ceremony for the class of 2022, he received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater.
Sam Heughan’s Sexuality: Why People Assume He is Gay
Sam Heughan is a tall, charming man who would appeal to most ladies – and even men. He is also very attractive.
Claims against Sam Heughan were more specific than those against Markiplier, whose innocent friendship with his coworker Sean Mcloughlin, better known as Jacksepticeye, served as the basis for the allegations.
Sam Heughan provided his LGBTQ fans with plenty of reasons to believe that he is one of them. He has performed gay characters twice in his career and has kept playing the gay character for three years in a row.
He made his television debut as a gay reporter in the film, “A Very British Sex Scandal.” This portrayal of a homosexual character was his first, and he did a rather excellent job.
From 2008 to 2009, he performed once again as a gay man in “Plague Over England.” Years of playing such a delicate character has given his fans second thoughts about his sexual orientation.
Some of his followers and the homosexual community truly believed he was gay.
In 2017, after the season three finale of Outlander, his co-actor, Steven Cree, tweeted “Surprise! Sam Heughan and I are getting married”, and Sam Heughan added a reply: “Again…”.
Though it was hash-tagged “fake news”, this added to the speculations about Heughan’s sexuality.
So Is The Rumor True?
Aside from these rumors and conjectures, Sam Heughan’s homosexuality has not been proven. The actor has never come out in public as gay.
The Scottish actor made a lengthy message on social media about the abuse he has experienced over the previous six years. In addition to all else he said in the post, he disproved the LGBT speculations.
He said, “Recently, these false claims vary from me manipulating fans, being a closet homosexual, trying to mislead or exhort fans for money, and disregarding [COVID-19] advice. I’ve done none of the above”.
The actor seems to get along well with both sexes while focusing on advancing his career. But let’s take a look at his past relationships.
Sam Heughan’s Relationships
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, the 41-year-old Outlander star was asked if he was single. The question caught Heughan off guard as he asked, “Wow, why are you asking?”
Host Drew Barrymore said that she was asking for the actor’s dedicated fanbase, who are called the ‘Heughigans’.
Heughan’s response was: “The job is so all-encompassing and we spend so much time on set and at work, but I’m open to something. I’m not sure what I’m saying I’m open for, but I’m open.”
Previously, the Scottish star opened up about the difficulties of dating while having a busy acting career. He told Inquirer in January 2020, “Certainly, relationships are hard when you’re working in Scotland 10 months a year. I travel a lot and any downtime I have, I’m trying to do other projects, so very much, my career comes first. Maybe I will find someone eventually.”
In the past, Heughan has been notoriously private when it comes to addressing his love life. But he was previously linked to actresses including Amy Shiels, MacKenzie Mauzy, and Cody Kennedy.
Heughan rarely comments on his personal life in interviews. Heughan is close to The Return actress, Amy Shiels, but it seems as though they’re currently just friends.
Did Sam Heughan Marry MacKenzie Mauzy?
While Heughan and Mauzy were romantically linked in the past, the two never got married. They were rumored to have begun dating in 2016, but that relationship allegedly ended in 2018.
Sam Heughan Net Worth
As of 2023, Sam Heughan’s Net Worth is estimated to be $5 million. A large portion of it comes from his earnings from the tv series Outlander.
Celebrity life undoubtedly has its grit. But Sam Heughan has not only endured the hardships that come with being popular, he has also managed to keep his love life away from prying eyes.
He has been linked to a number of females, but despite the speculations, there is no actual evidence that he’s actually dated—or is dating—any of them. Neither is there any evidence that the actor is actually gay.
