Judge Joe Brown gained notoriety when he presided over the appeal of the man charged with killing Martin Luther King, Jr. He was eventually replaced by another judge owing to allegations of bias.

Brown prevailed in the Democratic primary to become the district attorney for Shelby County in March 2014. He was defeated by Republican incumbent Amy Weirich in the general election by a margin of 30%.
