Pusha T is an American hip-hop artist from The Bronx. With a net worth of $14 million, Pusha T is the co-founder of Re-Up, a label he runs with his brother.
Pusha T found himself in the spotlight when he and his brother Gene formed a hip-hop duo called Clipse.
Pusha T recently signed to Kanye West’s Good imprint label and Def recordings. At the same time, he has been in the news for falling out with veteran Canadian rapper Drake, which led to the rejection of multiple diss tracks.
Personal Life
Terrence Levarr Thornton, popularly known as Pusha T, was born in The Bronx, New York City, New York on May 13, 1977.
Torrence moved with his family soon after to Virginia Beach, Virginia where he grew up with his brother Gene Thornton. As a teen, Gene was kicked out of their home when it was discovered he sold drugs with Pusha T.
They would later pursue a career in hip-hop in 1992 when they formed a hip-hop duo called eclipse.
Career
In 1997, they linked up with Pharrell Williams, an American record producer who helped Clipse sign to Elektra records.
Afterward, they started working on their debut album “Exclusive Audio Footage”, but it wouldn’t go so well as the first single in the album “The Funeral” turned out to be a commercial bust, leading to the cancellation of the entire album.
After Torrence adopted the moniker Pusha T, Elektra dropped Clipse from the record label.
He subsequently made several cameos on other artists; songs as Nivea’s “Run Away” and Kelis’ “Good Stuff”, due to his relationship with the producer of both songs, The Neptune.
In 2001, the duo was signed by Pharrel Williams to Artista Records and they began working on their label debut produced by The Neptune.
On May 14, 2002, “Grindin” which was their debut single was released and soon became a summer Top 40 hit after becoming number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Clipse achieved a similar feat when their second single “When the Last Time” reached an all-time high of number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Propelled by earlier success, the duo released their debut commercial album “Lord Willin” on August 20, 2002.
The album peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-hop Album chart and number 4 on the Billboard 200.
In late 2003, Clipse worked on their second album “Hell Hath no Fury” which eventually came to a pause when Arista Records hip-hop artists were absorbed into Jive Records, its sister label in a merger between Sony Music Entertainment and BMG in 2004.
With no option due to contractual agreements, Clipse remained with Jive, where they continued and finished working on their second album.
However, due to Jive’s evident preference for pop-oriented artists over hip-hop stars, they stalled on the release of Hell Hath no Fury.
As the delay continued, Clipse sued the record label after they refused to grant their request to be formally released from their contract.
In 2004, Clipse launched its record label imprint Re-Up Records and formed the hip-hop gang Re-Up Gang with other rappers.
Finally on May 9, 2006, Jive and Clipse agreed to release Hell hath no Fury through Jive and Re-Up.
The album, produced by The Neptune, was launched on November 28, 2006, and sold more than 80,000 copies in the first week of release, where it also reached number 14 on the Billboard 200.
Despite criticism, the album recorded more success than “Lord Willin” as it was given a five-star rating by the XXL, a hip-hop magazine, as the 6th album to receive that honour.
After releasing their third album, the duo announced that they’d be focusing on their solo careers.
Then in 2010, Pusha T signed to Kanye West’s GOOD Music label. He made his first appearance on Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” as a member of the GOOD roster.
He also appeared with Kanye West on his hit “Runaway” and was featured on several tracks from the GOOD Fridays series.
Pusha T debuted his solo titled “My God” through Funkmaster Flex on New York City’s Hot 97.
The track was a hit but was later leaked onto the internet. Although it was not until August 24 2011 that the track was officially released on iTunes and Amazon.
In 2020, Pusha T started Heir Wave Media Group, his new record label, to sign and develop artists from Virginia.
By now, he was the president of GOOD Music, but he focused on building a roster of talented artists from his hometown.
