Early And Personal Life

Sean Patrick Hannity was born on December 30, 1961, in New York City, in the United States. He grew up in Franklin Square, a Long Island suburb in Nassau County, New York.

His father, Hugh J. Hannity, worked as a family court officer while his mother, Lillian Flynn, was as a stenographer and corrections officer at a county jail.

The youngest of four children, Hannity is the only son of his parents.

Fun fact: Sean Hannity is of Irish descent; all four of his grandparents immigrated to the US from Ireland years before he was born.

Education

During his middle school years, Hannity went to Sacred Heart Seminary in Hempstead, New York. After that, he attended St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary High School in Uniondale, New York.

After high school, Hannity decided to study political science in college. He attended three different universities, from Adelphi University in Long Island, to  New York University and then the University of California (UC), Santa Barbara.

Interestingly, despite attending three different universities, the prominent media personality never got to collect any college certificate from these institutions because he dropped out. Hannity admitted that he dropped out of university because he ran out of money after paying for three years of classes out of pocket.

Still, he claimed to have had excellent grades at all three universities he attended.

After quitting school, Hannity moved to Rhode Island with his sister Teddy Grisham to start a wallpaper and design business.

Marriage To Jill Rhodes

Hannity and Jill Rhodes’s love story began in 1991. At that time, Hannity had just relocated to Huntsville, Alabama, after accepting a job at WVNN.

Rhodes, on the other hand, was working as a political journalist for Huntsville Times.

According to Hannity, he fell in love with Rhodes the moment he saw her in the column. “She was really talented — gifted, but I really just fell in love with the little picture in her column,” Hannity told Newsmax in 2011.

Speaking to PEOPLE magazine in 2002, Hannity and Rhodes recalled how their relationship started. According to them, Hannity would call Rhodes to request story ideas to cover on his local radio show.

The latter admitted that the frequent voicemail messages by Hannity got her intrigued, and she attended a 1992 mayoral debate he organized.

“There, I looked at his face and I said, ‘That is the man I’m going to marry.’ ” Rhodes recalled to PEOPLE. The pair ended up starting a romantic relationship.

The love the two shared was so strong that Rhodes held her ground even when discouraged by her pastor and colleagues not to marry Hannity. Her pastor was against the marriage because the media personality disagreed with him about how the church was becoming too liberal during a premarital counseling session.

But despite all the discouraging voices, the two love birds eventually walked down the aisle on January 9, 1993. They have two children together; Sean Patrick and Merri Kelly, born in 1998 and 2002, respectively.

Relationship With Ainsley Earhardt

Since 2020, Hannity has been romantically linked to Ainsley Earhardt, a fellow Fox News host. Both Hannity and Earhadt have, however, refused to comment on the accuracy of the rumors.

That year, they seemed to make their relationship public when they showed up together to a party. An undisclosed source also told Vanity Fair that Earhardt hosted her “Fox & Friends” program from the basement of Hannity’s Long Island mansion during the pandemic.

When asked about these rumors, Hannity, through a spokesper said through a network spokesperson, “I do not discuss my personal life in public.”

Radio Career

In 1989, Hannity landed his first radio job at the University of California–Santa Barbara (UCSB). He worked as a volunteer host on Santa Barbara’s KCSB FM.

While at KCSB, Hannity wasted no time striving to increase his conservative audience and build his brand. However, this resulted in many controversial incidents, like when he made an anti-LGBT comment. Sadly, he was taken off the air after these incidents.

Hannity didn’t allow this to stop him from achieving his career goals. Instead, he took advantage of the publicity surrounding the incidents at KCSB to get his first paid radio job at WVNN in Athens, Alabama.

In 1992, Hannity moved from WVNN to WGST in Atlanta, taking over Neal Boortz’s position, who joined rival station WSB. Then in January of 1997, the Radio host started working full-time for WABC, where he got a late-night time slot.

Later in January 1998, he moved to the far more desirable after-drive-time slot. It was at this point that Hannity’s career really began to take off. He held onto this slot till the end of 2013.

Hannity has also hosted the 3-6 p.m. time slot on New York City’s WOR since January 2014. The conservative political talk show “The Sean Hannity Show” is about Hannity’s personal ideologies and views about politicians, current events, and issues.

TV Career

In 1996, Roger Ailes, the co-founder of Fox News, hired Hannity to anchor a television program, giving him his first exposure to reach a larger audience. Hannity and Alan Colmes co-hosted the show, which debuted as “Hannity & Colmes“.

On the show, Colmes provided a liberal perspective, while Hannity offered a conservative one. While still hosting the show with Colmes, Hannity started his own Sunday night television show in 2007, called “Hannity’s America,” also on Fox News.

The Hannity & Colmes show would continue for 13 years until Colmes departure in January 2009. After Colme’s exit, the network changed the program’s name to “Hannity,” replacing “Hannity’s America.”

Episodes of “Hannity” are broadcast live at 9 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. The Friday edition, on the other hand, is usually pre-recorded.

It has become the leading cable news program in its time slot. It typically features lengthy monologues that summarize the day’s happenings.

It also features political and legal analyses of different topics and problems.

Awards, Honors And Achievements

Hannity has won numerous awards for his work in the media and entertainment industry. In 2003 and 2007, he won the National Association of Broadcasters’ Marconi Award in the category: “Network Syndicated Personality of the Year“.

He was ranked #2 on the 2009 Talkers Magazine list of the “100 most influential radio talk show hosts.” The media personality has also won the Radio & Records “National Talk Show Host of The Year” Award three times in a row (in 2003, 2004, and 2005).

In 2005, the Liberty University chancellor awarded Hannity an honorary degree. He was also inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in November of 2017.

Besides being a great media personality, Hannity is also a good writer, with three books ranking #1 as best-selling books.

His 2022 book, “Let Freedom Ring: Winning the War of Liberty over Liberalism“, was on the New York Times Best-Sellers list for 17 weeks.

Deliver Us From Evil: Defeating Terrorism, Despotism, and Liberalism“, his 2014 book was #1 on the New York Times Best-Sellers list for five weeks straight.

Similarly, “Conservative Victory: Defeating Obama’s Radical Agenda” quickly took the #1 spot when published in 2010.

Controversies

Despite his success, Hannity has also faced some controversies in his career. The media personality faced two major controversies in 2017.

The first one happened after he promoted a conspiracy theory concerning the passing of Seth Rich, a staff member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

Hannity and others claimed that Rich’s involvement with documents WikiLeaks made public during the 2016 campaign led to his death. However, the police in Washington, D.C., maintained that Rich got murdered during a botched robbery.

Hannity’s programs lost many sponsors because of this. Several advertisers pulled out. Rich’s parents also filed a lawsuit against Fox News in 2018 for promoting a conspiracy theory about Rich’s death.

In late 2017, Hannity faced another controversy when he supported Roy Moore, the then-Senate candidate for Alabama accused of sexual harassment and assault. As part of his support, he invited Moore and his supporters to his programs.

As a result, more advertisers pulled out from his programs. Hannity viewers counter-protested by launching a wave of boycotts against the ad agencies and their products.
