What’s the history behind curly fries?

Curly fries are usually tied to the popular restaurant Arby’s. In 1964, the Raffel Brothers created the restaurant chain in Boardman, Ohio.

According to history, they were looking for something unique that would differentiate them from the stereotype of fast-food restaurants exclusively serving burgers. Forrest and Leroy Raffel would later expand their company to over 3,600 Arby’s locations worldwide.

Following a trip to Bombay, India, Forrest, and Leroy developed Arby’s curly fries. During the late 1980s, they hunted for curry roast beef and attempted to open an Arby’s restaurant in India.

Both boys looked forward to viewing many holy cows and riding elephants around town. What they were most enthusiastic about. The highlight of their trip was meeting Shridhar Chillal!

Chillal was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest fingernails. While exploring the open market, the brothers came across him.

They reported how taken back they were when they spotted Shridhar Chillal waving goodbye to his children on the school bus. His left hand’s nails were extremely long and curled.

In an almost “eureka” moment, the brothers are said to have exchanged knowing glances and remarked, “curly fries” were quickly added to the Arby’s menu.

What’s the difference between curly fries and french fries?

Though made from potatoes, curly fries are, in many ways, different from the normal french fries everyone knows. Curly Fries are French fries that have been sliced with a special curly fry cutter to form long, thin spirals.

They’re also known as wavy fries and are frequently served with melted cheese on the side. Your choice in condiments can also be anything from ketchup, sour cream, or sweet chili sauce.

Fries or french fried potatoes, on the other hand, are prepared a little differently. These are cut into thinly sliced tube-like shapes and deep-fried in oil.

What restaurants serve curly fries in the USA?

Arby’s is probably the most popular when it comes to curly fries. Their perfectly curled spiral is undeniably the best when it comes to texture. When you blend this with Arby’s seasoning, you have one of the best fries in the fast-food industry.

Some of the other popular fast food franchises that offer curly fries on their menu include:

  • Jack In The Box
  • Burger King
  • Taco Bell
  • Subway
  • Mcdonald’s
